Learning to Speak English

English is a very important tool in international communication. h is a common case that many non-native speakers can write but not speak English well. ms is well known, It is not easy for all learner whose mother tongue is not English to speak English fluently. Usually, learning to speak English goes through five steps.

The first step is passive speaking, that is, you can just listen to others. You may be able to understand others quite well but you cannot say any simple sentences or even any words you know. In this case the main obstacle is that you are shy or afraid of making mistakes.

The second step is indirect speaking. At this step, you can say some simple words or sentences.  However, before you express something you always think with your mother tongue and then translate it into English.  In fact, you have enough words and  knowledge to speak much better. Since you translate word by word and do not think in English you are often faced with additional difficulty of translation.

If you try to think in English, you will do well in speaking. In this case, you have been at your third step called point speaking, that is, you can directly use English words or phrases to make much longer sentences than before but often make mistakes and cannot speak without breaks. You first make a sentence or idea in your mind and then speak out. After that you think out another sentence and then speak out, and so on. If so, you must do more spoken exercises.

After a certain time you will be able to speak clearly. That means that you will go forward to another step called clear speaking. Now you can think and speak more freely and continually, but you may occasionally make some mistakes. You no longer need to think over in advance. You can express what you want to say immediately.

However, this is not the last step. You should still try your best to move to next step called pure speaking. At this step, you will try to steak English properly being careful of the cultural back-ground, pronunciation, intonation, stress and even rhetoric and hardly make any mistakes. You wish to speak as native speakers do and you will imitate their gesture, interjection, etc. Your words flow your mouth as freely as from the pen of master. The sound is pure, beautiful and pleasant.

Every learner has to experience these five steps or stages though it is different from person to person in the time of staying at each step. I hope you can reach the fifth step more quickly.
